Pre-prosthetic surgery refers to the preparation of your mouth before the placement of a dental prosthesis such as a partial or full denture. Some patients may require minor oral surgery before receiving dentures to ensure optimal comfort and functionality. Dentures rest on the bone ridge in your mouth, so it is important that this bone is the correct shape and size. When a tooth is extracted, the underlying bone may be uneven or sharp, which can affect how a denture fits. In these cases, the bone may need to be smoothed or reshaped. Occasionally, excess bone or gum tissue must also be removed to allow for the proper seating of the denture.
To create the best environment for your denture, we may recommend one or more of the following procedures:
- Bone smoothing and reshaping
- Removal of excess bone
- Bone ridge reduction
- Removal of excess gum tissue
- Exposure of impacted teeth
During your consultation, we will evaluate your needs and explain any recommended procedures to ensure the best outcome for your denture placement.
