How to Prepare for Anesthesia
Whether you are undergoing local anesthesia, IV sedation, or general anesthesia, there are specific steps you must follow prior to your procedure. These include fasting guidelines, transportation planning, and notifying us of any changes in your health. Your cooperation ensures we can deliver the highest level of care with minimal risk.
Do not eat or drink anything, including water, for 8 hours before your appointment if you are receiving IV sedation or general anesthesia. This is critical for your safety. If you are receiving only local anesthesia, you may have a light meal before the procedure unless otherwise instructed.

Medications

Take your regular medications as prescribed with a small sip of water, unless directed otherwise by our team. It’s important to inform us if you take:

  • Blood thinners (e.g., warfarin, Plavix)
  • Diabetes medications (especially insulin)
  • Anti-anxiety or antidepressant medications
  • Any herbal or over-the-counter supplements

Home Instructions Before Oral Surgery

Please review the following guidelines to properly prepare for your upcoming IV sedation procedure:

  • Do not eat or drink anything—including water—for at least eight hours before your scheduled appointment.
  • Avoid smoking for at least 12 hours prior to surgery. For best results, we recommend reducing or quitting smoking in the days leading up to your procedure.
  • You must be accompanied by a responsible adult who can remain on-site throughout the procedure and drive you home afterward.
  • Do not operate any vehicles or heavy equipment for 24 hours after receiving sedation.
  • Wear loose, comfortable clothing with sleeves that can be rolled above the elbow, and choose flat, secure shoes.
  • Please remove contact lenses, all jewelry, and dentures before the procedure begins.
  • Avoid wearing lipstick, heavy makeup, or nail polish on the day of your surgery.
  • Inform our office if you develop any cold, sore throat, digestive upset, or other illness before your appointment.
  • If you take prescription medications regularly, check with Williams before your surgery for guidance on how to manage them that day.
